Captain Henry Wax

    Born Heinrich Wachs, Henry came from Wartenburg, Germany between 1743 and 1745. He was naturalized April 10, 1767, in Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. Henry, from Alsace Township and his brother Peter, from Bern Township, subscribed to the Declaration of Independence "in manner of Quakers and other Protestants."
    Henry married the first time to Margaret Geschwind on May 11, 1767 in Alsace, Berks County, Pennsylvania.and soon added to his lands on December 27, 1770 when Henry's father deeded him 190 acres. He sold 13 acres of Alsace Township to Eberhard Smith on January 23, 1776. He also sold 190 acres of Alsace Township to William Green.
    In The Revolutionary War, Henry was a Sergent in Captain Daniel DeTurk's Company of Berks County, Pennsylvania from 1776 to 1778 for Olney Township and he was commissioned Captain for his own Company in Alsace Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia on January 5, 1784.
    On April 6,1786 Henry sold the remainder of his land to Joe Hiester in Alsace Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (Deed Book 9, Page 341, Reading Records) and moved his family to Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. On December 8, 1789 he bought 168 acres of land west of the town of Fincastle from Andrew Henry, a former owner of Miller's Mill and there in becoming the new owner. Henry bought a considerable amount of land around Fincastle and was one of the largest land owners in Botetourt County, Virginia. The hill immeadiatly west of Fincastle is still known as Wax's Hill. Henry became an Tavern/Inn Keeper when he was issued a licence to do so January 13, 1794. Henry also owned land in Greenbriar County, Virginia.
    After his first wife died, he married Cathrine Kerns Keyser on May 01, 1791 in Botetourt County, Virginia or Lewisberg, West Virginia. Henry died November 06, 1796. He is buried at The Church of England Cemetery, Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia - now Fincastle Presbyterian Cemetery. His wives are though to also be buried there. There is a monument erected by the DAR in the cemetery for Revolutionary War soldiers who are buried there. Henry Wax's name is on it.

    4)Philip Wax: Born October 20, 1771 in Alsace, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He died before 1796.

    5)Elizabeth Wax: Born November 17, 1772 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Married George H. Etter, Jr. (August 27, 1765 - March 11, 1842) on March 9, 1791 in Botetourt County, Virginia. Elizabeth died December 10, 1810 in Mooresburg, Hawkins County, Tennessee.

    6)Henry Wax, Jr.: Born August 01, 1774 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Married Catherine Book (15 December 15, 1784 - June 18, 1858 in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia) on October 19, 1803 in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia. Henry died February 10, 1842 of some casualty. Henry and Cathrine are buried at The Church of England Cemetery, Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia - now Fincastle Presbyterian Cemetery.

    7)Maria Wax: Born February 12, 1776 in Oley, Alsace Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Married Jacob Freidrich Seagle (February 2, 1771 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania - November 22, 1822 in Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia) on April 9, 1795 in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia. He was Blacksmith and Tanner. Maria died August 06, 1857 in Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia and is buried at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Wytheville, Virginia. Will: Will Book 9, page 357. Children: James Seagle (1801 - 1883, Mary Magdalena Seagle (1803 - 1883 in Callaway County, Missouri), Henry W. Seagle (1805 - 1837), Priscilla Malinda Seagle (1808 - 1884 in Cote Sans Dessein, Missouri), Minerva Seagle (about 1810 - ????), Lucinda G. Seagle (1812 - 1863), Angelina Eliza Seagle (1814 - 1874).

    9)John Wax: Born November 15, 1779 in Alsace, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

    10)Magdalina Wax: Born September 15, 1781 in Alsace, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Married 1st January 27, 1779 Abraham Hutsinpiller. Married 2nd 1820 John Anderson. Magdalina died March 12, 1840.

    11)Susannah Wax: Born July 14, 1783 in Alsace, Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Married Reverend Daniel Howry (Howrey) November 25, 1801. Susannah died February 14, 1851 in Elkins, Arkansas.

    12)Hannah Wax: Born March 26, 1785 in Alsace, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Married George Jr. Karnes July 20, 1801. Hannah died February 1836 in Franklin County, Arizona.
