I have some information that he may have come from France and partiscipated in the French and Indian Wars. This may be true, however I received an e-mail from a British gentleman in 1998.... "We are a British family living in Birmingham, England. My father is
originally from Leeds, and his family moved to England from Ireland in
the thirties. My father (John L'Amie) was born in 1946, and was one of
five children.
Anyway, the reason I was so shocked to find references to the L'Amie's
in Virginia, is that 3 years ago we spent a week in Virginia and we
never saw any mention of the name. This will be a brilliant surprise for
my dad, as he has been researching the L'Amie family history for years,
he's gone as far back as 1066, which is quite an achievement
considering, that the records in France were burnt during the
revolution." So the Lamie family name has been in England for for quite sometime.
He was born about 1731 and according to family tradition came from Scotland to America as a British soldier and married in Philadelphia about 1761. (Family tradition is in substantial agreement on this history, much of it based on the statement of Mary Buchanan Shell; tombstone records, Lamie Cemetery, Smyth County, Virginia)
In 1770 Andrew and his bachelor brother Samuel settled a 300 acre farm on Cove Creek, a branch of the North Fork of the Holston River in Botetourt County (now Smythe County) Virginia. Soon after 1771, Samuel moved about three miles down Cove Creek to land previously cleared by by James Anderson. On September 8, 1774, Samuel was captured by Indians and probably taken to Canada or killed. Andrew and his family fled to Royal Oak Fort- now Marion, Virginia for protection.
(Lyman Chalkey. "Records of Augusta County, Virginia"(Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1965, reprint), II, 229, 230; Botetourt County, Virginia, List of Tithables, 1770, 1772: Washington County, Virginia Entries and Surveys, Volume I)
Andrew and his family then occupied and cultivated Samuel's vacated land and secured title to it from the Loyala Land Company.
He hired Hugh Hays to cut house logs and Edward Jones and his son John Lamie to cut briars. The house was raised a few weeks before The Battle of King's Mountain in 1780 and the family moved into it on Christmas Day, 1780.
(Lyman Chalkey "Records"....II, 229, 230)
Andrew served in Dunmore's War with the Indians and was on duty in Maiden Springs Station in Tazewell County, Virginia from August 16 through September 4, 1774. Later Arthur Campbell claimed Andrew was a Tory during the American Revolution, but offered no proof.
(Ibid: William C. Pendleton, "History of Tazewell" (Richmond; W. C. Hill Printing Company 1920) page 225; Goodridge Wilson, "Smythe Country History and Traditions" page 53.
In 1778 Andrew was an appraiser of the estate of Samuel Fowler. On May 20, 1784, he sued John Hays for debt. He served on juries several times and in 1782 and 1786 was taxed on 392 acres of land in Washington County, Virginia
(Washington County, Virginia Court Minutes and Tax Lists)
On August 24, 1781, Andrew had 300 acres on the upper part of Cove Creek surveyed. He also had 175 acres surveyed on the north side of Clinch Mountain at Maiden Springs Fork May 7, 1783. 150 acres on Cove Creek on October 15, 1783, 50 acres on Cove Creek on December 8, 1795 and 100 acres on the waters of Cove Creek December 12, 1795.
(Ibid: Entries and Surveys Volume I)
Andrew Lamie died April 3, 1819. He had 6 children; two boys and four girls
(Statment supported by George Craig Buchanan and Lamie Cemetery Records).
A gentleman named Jim Gillespie wrote stating "In the Lamie cemetery which is (snip) on Route 42 I found the tombstone of Andrew Lamie sticking out of a tree that is slowly engulfing it". (snip) "Three of Andrew’s children are buried here, John, James, and Eleanor. I assume they are the three stones near Andrew, but I cannot read the inscriptions to determine which stone belongs to which person".
